Dog Allergy

Having a dog allergy can be one of the worst problems you have to face especially if you have a family dog that everyone loves. Most family dogs begin to take on the characteristics of the owner so dealing with a dog allergy problem can be traumatic.

Many people ignore the medical advice and decide to keep their dog and learn to deal and cope with their allergy symptoms. However, they should be aware that some dog allergy symptoms could be severe.

Are You Born With A Dog Allergy?

Yes, you could be born with a dog allergy but anyone can develop a dog allergy, at any age. Many people that are allergic to dogs also have an allergy to such things as molds and pollens. It has also be noted that if others in your family have an allergy to dogs such as your parents or grandparents then you are more likely to develop the same allergy.

The most common allergens from dogs come from their dander, saliva and urine. The less dander a dog produces the better for a person with a dog allergy; however, all dogs shed their skin and produce dander.

Which Breds are People Less Allergic To?

The dogs that produce less dander are ones that only shed their skin around every 21 days and they include such breeds as Airedales, schnauzers, and poodles. However, some dogs shed their skin about every 3 to 4 days such as breeds like Irish setters, basset hounds, German shepherds, and cocker spaniels.

Help For Your Dog

If you have a dog allergy and wish to keep the family pet you will be glad to know that you can at least control the dander in most cases by ensuring that you are feeding your dog a proper diet and by bathing and grooming them on a regular basis.

Symptoms associated with a dog allergy include sneezing, itchy nose, nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, sore throat, coughing, skin rashes or hives, fatigue, asthma, headaches, and problems with breathing.

For people with a dog allergy they should wash their hands every time they touch or play with their dog touch their bedding or toys. If the allergy is severe, it would be best to take a shower and change their clothing as well.

You must also remember if you have a dog allergy that the allergens on your dog can be airborne for a long period of time. These allergens can stick to furniture, walls, carpet, clothing, and even find their way into your heating and cooling ducts. Therefore, it would be best to keep the dog out of bedrooms of those with allergies and off the furniture. If at all possible, keep the dog outdoors as well as the dog allergy.
