Effective Prostate Enlargement Medications
Mike Perine has BPH, benign prostatic hyperplasia, more commonly known as an enlarged prostate. He participated in a major clinical trial to see if medication could help him escape surgery. "I was trying to avoid any, any complications to get it to that extent.", said Perine. Fortunately, medications have been developed over the last ten years. Researchers tested two of them — doxazosin and finasteride. They found that each of the drugs slow down the progression of BPH and reduce the need for surgery. In combination, they are safe and doubly effective. Doctor Joe Ramsdell says, "Surgery used to be the standard of treatment. over the last ten years, a number of medications have been developed, specifically doxazosin and finasteride. Each of them reduced prostate enlargement by probably a third. I mean that's a big change. but when you put them together, reduction was by two-thirds.", says Dr. Ramsdell. The prostate gland sits under the bladder and surrounds the urinary canal. As it grows it chokes off the flow of urine. Doxazosin, an alpha blocker, relaxes the prostate to improve the flow. Finasteride inhibits testosterone production and shrinks the prostate. Ramsdell says, "As a result of that trial, medical management probably has now become the new standard treatment for, for bph in men who have symptoms."
And more good news. Men with mild symptoms may get by with watchful waiting - where the only treatment is a doctor's watchful eye on the condition. Because of his mild symptoms, it was Perine's treatment of choice.
