Heart Disease Prevention

When you first hear the phrase heart disease prevention you may wonder what heart disease is and why you should be worried about it if no one in your family has ever had this disease.

Well, the facts remain clear regardless of its absence in your family ... heart disease effects people all over the world and is the number one cause of death in many countries.

Examples of heart disease include angina, heart attack, and arrhythmia just to name a few. Preventing heart disease doesn't mean a complete lifestyle change for most people ... usually simple modifications will do the trick.

Exercise

Heart disease prevention starts with exercise. Exercise does in fact lower your chances of developing heart disease. With regular exercise you make your heart stronger which will aid in heart disease prevention. When your heart is strong is can pump more blood throughout your body without much effort. When a person exercises on a regular basis they are lowering their chances of heart disease by about half when compared to a person that does not exercise. Heart disease prevention also means keeping your cholesterol levels and blood pressure under control which can also be aided by regular exercise.

High cholesterol levels and high blood pressure both can lead to heart disease, so keeping these under control is great in heart disease prevention. Exercise should be practiced around three to four times per week and should last around 30 minutes. You can choose your own exercise regimen but some of the best exercise programs for heart disease prevention include dancing, cycling, brisk walking, swimming, gardening, mowing the lawn, and even taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

Stop Smoking

Another heart disease prevention is either to never smoke or to quit. If you give up smoking for just five years your chances of developing heart disease will have decreased to the same as a person that has never smoked a day in their lives. There are many different ways in which to quit smoking and you should talk with your doctor about the best ways for you personally if you wish for heart disease prevention.

Controlling Blood Pressure

We all know that high blood pressure leads to heart disease. But, what can you do if you already have high blood pressure symptoms? The best way to work with your high blood pressure that will also aid in heart disease prevention includes watching your weight, cut down on your salt intake, give up smoking, reduce stress levels, relax, cut down on alcoholic beverages, and of course exercise.

Eating Habits

Eating habits may also have a lot to do with heart disease and learning to eat properly and healthy can be one of the best heart disease prevention methods around. For heart disease prevention, try to cut down on any foods that have a high salt content and instead of frying eat more foods that are grilled, steamed, micro-waved, or baked.
