Insomnia is a sleeping disorder, affecting almost 70- 80 % of the Americans as well as all the other societies in the world.

Those affected by the disorder have many choices regarding insomnia treatment.

Some go for counselling, others may go to a medical practitioner, but there are an alarming lot who would prefer to keep it within them and not disclose it to anybody for the fear of being ostracized by society.

Though I am quite a loner myself and by principle I do not generally make my problems and distresses public, yet the other day I just happened to be spilling my woes to a friend of mine - David. Personifying sleep as though it was some long lost pal of mine, I told David that it had been real long since I had lost all contacts with it and I was not even aware of its where abouts. To this David added, " Are you talking about sleep or that dowdy looking gay dude in our college".

"Stop joking, David, I am serious", I said. "It may sound funny to you, but I haven't slept in days", and that was the last I saw of David.

Like me, a lot of men hold themselves responsible for their poor sleeping habits - which of course is not too far from the truth. However, the fact of the matter is that the ability to fall asleep and sleep soundly is a mental process that we have absolutely no control over.

Environmental factors, stress, medications and caffeine are the real cause of these problems not to mention the distractions from the blonde next door or the real cute barmaid down the local.

The modern theory propounded by the doctors these days, recognizes the need for regular sound sleep, yet very often the only treatment for irregular sleep that the doctors prescribe are narcotics. These drugs are highly addictive and in a lot of cases may result in a long- term dependency. Some users have also reported a feeling of grogginess in the morning that can be almost paralleled to a hangover induced by alcohol.

Millions of people have a good night sleep, snoring their heads off while some of us can’t even get a wink of it.
