Mesothelioma Treatment

We discussed what mesothelioma is, and the next logical step is to look at mesothelioma treatments.

There are several options for treating mesothelioma depending on the type of mesothelioma that you are suffering from. Like all forms of cancer, the earlier you get it diagnosed, the better your chances of survival are.

For this reason, it is important for you to see a doctor as soon as possible if you are having any of the symptoms described in the article “Symptoms of Mesothelioma.”

No matter what type of mesothelioma you are suffering from, chemotherapy is always an option. Basically, doctors use drugs to combat the cancer that is ravaging your body. Chemotherapy is hard on the patient, but depending on how advanced your cancer is, it also has a pretty good success rate. Chemotherapy can be administered in a pill form, or put directly into your body using a needle in the vein or muscle. This type of mesothelioma treatment is usually preferred by the patient.

Surgery is another mesothelioma treatment that is available to all types of mesothelioma patients. Sometimes the doctors can remove the cancer before it can spread any further. Sometimes they are forced to remove a whole organ. For instance, in some cases of malignant mesothelioma, it may be necessary for the doctor to remove a whole lung. This is called a pneumonectomy.

Other times, the doctors may remove the cancer and some of the surrounding tissue. One problem with this type of mesothelioma treatment is that if the doctor misses some of the cancer it may reoccur. Then again, it may reoccur anyways. If it does, you now have recurring mesothelioma.

Radiation therapy is another type of mesothelioma treatment. With this type of treatment, doctors use high energy rays such as high dose x-rays to kill of the cancer cells and shrink tumours. There are two types of radiation therapy. One is external radiation therapy. This is where a doctor uses a machine to produce the radiation outside the body. An internal radiation therapy uses puts materials that produce radiation through tubes near the infected area.

Since a common side effect of mesothelioma is a build up of fluid in the chest area, doctors may have to drain this fluid using a needle into the chest or abdomen and gently sucking the excess fluid out.

Much of the time, a doctor will also put drugs through a tube into your chest or abdomen to make sure that more fluid doesn’t build up in the effected area.

These are the main types of mesothelioma therapy. Research is still being conducted on alternative mesothelioma treatments, but since the disease is so rare, it may take some time. In the meantime, these are your alternatives.

Picking which type of mesothelioma treatment is right for you, is a decision that is best made with the advice of your doctor. Your main job is to make sure you see that doctor as soon as you have any of the symptoms of mesothelioma. Hopefully, you won’t have to make a decision on which type of mesothelioma treatment is best for you.
