Viagra helps Sperm
Viagra enhances a man's chances of becoming a father in more ways than one. The anti-impotence drug increases the motility of sperm and boosts its ability to bind to an egg, South African researchers report.
They note in an article in the medical journal Fertility and Sterility that men with erectile dysfunction may use Viagra "as an aid to procreation," but the drug's effects "on sperm function have not been researched extensively." As lead investigator Dr. Stefan S. du Plessis told Reuters Health, his team's findings suggest that Viagra use "does not impair the fertilizing ability of spermatozoa. Certain sperm motility parameters were actually enhanced after Viagra consumption."
Because of Viagra's chemical properties, du Plessis and colleagues at the University of Stellenbosch in Tygerberg expected that Viagra gets into seminal fluid. To investigate what effect this might have, the researchers conducted a study involving 20 healthy male volunteers with normal erectile function. The participants were given either Viagra or an inactive placebo on separate occasions, and semen samples were collected one hour later. Examination of the specimens showed that the straight-line velocity of sperm increased after Viagra treatment, and the rate of sperm binding to the outer layer of an egg was almost 50 percent higher. "Men suffering from erectile dysfunction," du Plessis concluded, "therefore do not have to worry about any negative effects that the controlled use of Viagra may have on their male fertility status."
